>> we do have fog out there. there is gray over the bay but once that burns back like yesterday 60s and 70s coast and bay. mid 80s and here we go again low to mid 90s far enough inland. weekend forecast soon. here is sal. highway 4 traffic still looks pretty good. it's a little lighter than crush on this friday. and the morning drive is going to be on interstate 880 and north and southbound across the coliseum. let's go back to dave and pam. the investigation continues into that terrifying plane crash in watsonville. two people on board that plane were killed. look at these pictures. ktvu allie rasmus is there. tells us their plane almost landed right into the watson vail community hospital. >> reporter: now it's a little lighter out here. there is crime scene tape spanning the parking lot. this is the parking lot of the

watsonville community hospital. when this single engine crashed it hit the pavement. then it skidded 75 yards across the parking lot before it slammed into the front lobby of this medical office building. the plane bursts into flames. this is video that came in taken by witnesses at the scene of the crash. the two people on board that plane died but no one on the ground was hurt. that is because this medical office building was closed at the time of the crash. it all started around 7:30 last night. the muni 5-20 plane took off. again that plane skid across the pavement and hit the front of the building. the watson vail airport is less than a half a mile away from this hospital. >> in the window looking out it was a lot of smoke. never seen that color type of

smoke before. i've seen some pretty bad fires but the color of smoke i saw i have never seen that color of smoke before. >> reporter: and according to hospital spokespersons none of the patients in the hospital next door to the office building were effected. there were no power outages or evacuations. now the watsonville police sergeant told me at 10:00 this morning there will be some sort of briefing happening on the hospital grounds. we are told we will hear from faa and ntsb investigators as well as representatives from the hospital and the airport. you can still see what is left of the wreckage of the plane. four hours from flow we will be -- four hours from now we will be hearing from federal investigators. overnight four separate shootings injured ten people in oakland. and they all happened within a three mile area. the first shooting happened around 8:30 last night.

the last about 90 minutes later at 10:00. kraig debro spoke to police just a short time ago. joins us now with what they are saying about the investigation. >> reporter: pam a couple of the shootings are very close to one another. that is one of the things police will be looking at. i just made another call to oakland police headquarters no calls back just yet. the shooting started in east oakland. in a couple of the cases multiple victims. emts took two people to the hospital. police responded to that scene around 8:30 last night. a bullet grazed a third sick. that person did not need to go to the hospital. each victim has nonlife threatening injuries. 15 minutes earlier than that about a mile away at 108th and

foothill three people were shot there. police are looking for four or five suspects in that shoot shooting. at 10:00 someone was shot at 71st and international. we know there were no homicides last night. the injuries did not were not fatal in that shooting. police have not cussed the mote -- did not discuss the motive in any of these shootings. happening now the crew of atlantis is strap into the space shuttle and n preparation for -- in preparations for this mornings launch. the shuttle is scheduled to lift off at 8:26 our time this morning. but weather is still a pretty big concern. still only about a 30% chance of launch today because of a storm passing across florida. we are looking live there now. it doesn't look bad from this angle. nat is a is hoping it can get

started. this is the final u.s. space shuttle mission. the public is invited to chabot space center. kicks are $10 at the door. darts open in just about 9:minutes. claudine wong will be there. she will tell us what makes viewing the launch there so special. this there is another shuttle launch party another that. some of the bay area men that survived that fishing boat accident are back home. but they are devastated because their friends are still missing. >> we are leaving friends behind in the search. we stayed so long because we wanted to see if this was natural conclusions. >> family members and friends of seven missing fishermen got their first call from the coast guard. they were able to ask questions about that search.

>> what we want to do is find out what is going to be the final word on a possible dive. is it possible? when it would be possible. >> the coast guard is estimating that sunken boat is about 200 feet under water. they are not saying if a dive will happen. that search will continue at least until saturday. five teenagers now face murder charges in the death of a store owner in fairfield. police sarsed them -- police arrested them yesterday after the death of 70-year-old ho kim. investigators say the teenagers attacked kim with pepper spray and stole his cash register. the store owner managed to call police before dying late their night. the coroner determined that came died of heart problems. just about 30 minutes ago the labor department announced

the june jobless numbers. that report is not pretty. coming up at 6:15 we have a live report from washington. we will take a look at what will be behind a slow down in hiring. california's public utilities commission is adding nine people to its pipeline safety inspection team. these new hires bring the staff to 18 now. that is double the number of inspectors they had before the san bruno pipeline disaster. the cpuc says it's carrying out reforms suggested by an independent panel which said the commission was under staffed. 6:08 is the time right now. sal is taking a look at fog. >> that is right. near the golden gate bridge pam and dave. it has been foggy there. you can see a little bit more of bridge now. the last few days we have had fog issues. if you are driving especially on the waldo tunnel just use caution. remember the headlights keep them on low beam. if you are driving to san

francisco's northern half or parts of san mateo county the same warning goes for you. this mornings commute has been okay in oakland. north and southbound traffic looks good heading south to hayward. and if you are in contra cast that county still pretty good. i want to highlight some slow traffic driving through that two lane section in antioch. sunrise over the big city. and very similar to what we had yesterday on temperatures. have to be honest here i put my own temperatures together. there is a couple you can use. they have not been in sink this week. the warm that has been warm has been spot on inland. yes, there has been cooling. we're -- but yet by the coast we are getting 60s and 70s. a decrease in fog today compared to yesterday. it will be sunny today.

police say this elderly woman was killed on saturday in south dakota by james mcvey. he was arrested about 100 miles i way in wisconsin driving with the woman's car. mcvey told police he killed the woman as part of a planned cross country killing spree that would end with the assassination of the president. he was recently released from prison. congressional leaders will meet again with president obama this weekend to continue talks to raise the nation's debt ceiling. now the nation will reach its debt ceiling on august 2nd. republicans want major spending cuts before they agree to a plan. but house minority leader pelosi says any cuts to social security need to be off the table. 45 minutes ago the labor department adamanced the june jobless report. ktvu scott mcfarland is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom to tell us why it's a disappointing report. >> reporter: the headline

hiring has slowed to a standstill. the nation gained 18 jobs in june. cut backs by state governments, cities, school districts to blame. the consumers spending which is stifled by high gas prices and sinking home values didn't help. >> you have to have demand. you have to have sales. you have to have buyers. there has been a significant number in this month. >> reporter: here in washington all sides getting ready to spin these numbers. the speaker of the house and republicans speaking to the capitol in the next 15 minutes. the president from the white house in the next half hour. live in washington scott mcfarland. a man wanted for killing seven people in michigan took his own life after an hours long standoff with police. they are saying that 34-year-

old rodrick dantzler killed. among the seven dead was dantzler's exgirlfriend, her daughter and another child. he went into another home and took three other children hostage and killed himself. the hostages were not hurt. investigators are trying to determine a motive for the killings. there are new details about a popular east bay hiking trail. police in pittsburgh say a young man shot in the head on the delta trail wednesday night had also been shot at in antioch earlier this week. it's not clear if the two shootings are connected. police say the 20-year-old victim is on life support and not expected to survive. new information about the man killed during a confrontation with bart police. the san francisco medical examiner says the man is charles blair hill. ktvu news obtained this video

from the dmv. bart police say officers responded to reports of a drunk man on the platform at civic center station last sunday. they say hill aggressively confronted two officers with a bottle and a knife. but the bay citizen reports one witness told him hill did not run or lung at the officers. time now 6:17. san francisco's civil grand jury new report on the central subway project says the planners should go back to the drawing board. the current plan is to build a tunnel to take muni trains into china town. that is something china town residence have asked for in a long time. the new report says the 1.7- mile long subway would cost $1.5 billion. that is $176,000 per foot. city officials are defending the project they say it's on schedule and within its budget.

the money is -- still the grab jury said muni should improve the current service. >> it's difficult to understand how they can add this additional murder on the system when they can't maintain the current system. >> that report is also criticizing the long walks between nations and what amounts to a shortage of escalators. san francisco's muni and mayor have 60 days to respond to that civil grand jury report. it's now 6:18. time to check back in with sal. what is going on? i know you have been talking about fog in some areas. it's foggy in some areas. especially if you are driving in southern marin or san francisco you will see it. we are also looking at other issues. it is lighter than it normally is or maybe it's yust on a friday it's typically this way getting into the valley so far it looks good on 237 on 880 and

on 101. this is a look at 880 a little bit farther up north near the coliseum and the traffic is moving nicely in both directions. and if you are in contra costa county vallejo or pinole and western contra costa county pinole and richmond looking good. if you are driving in antioch you will see slow traffic there that is the rest of highway 680 and highway 24 looks good. hayward to union city drive so far looks good. at 620 let's go to steve. thank you, sir. we do have some fog. it's not as thick as it was yesterday. some of it is down in the deck. there is a decrease in that. there is already sunrise and sunshine for many inland. if you liked yesterday, you will like today. low to mid 90s. there was a ton of fog. now most of it is disappearing. there is still some holding on. a lot of 50s.

up. disappointing investigators, traders, economists, way off the forecast there in the bottom part of your screen shows the picture. dow jones already down 68 points and continuing to drop. we will keep watching. >> i was looking at their faces they don't look happy. >> no, they don't. we will smile for them and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us on the ktvu morning news. it's friday, july 8th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. >> in the news for you right now oakland police investigators spent the overnight hours combing over four separate shooting sprees. all of them happened within a three mile area and within 90 minutes. kraig debro is live outside the police headquarters with the latest details on what happened. >> reporter: good morning, dave. one of the things homicide detectives will be trying to do is establish any kind of connection between these

shootings. i made another call with more details on the victims conditions and to see if anybody is in custody. police responded to the first scene around 8:30 last night. it happened at 87th and e. three people were shot. two people were taken to the highland hospital. a bullet grazed a third person. at 9:35 another three people suffer gunshot wounds. none of the victims have life threatening injuries. another three people are shot at 108th avenue at foothill. this seems about a mile from the 98th avenue shooting. then around 10:00 p.m. about 15 minute later three people were shot at international. not many details about that shooting. we do know the person did not die. there are no suspects in any of these shootings. kraig debro. daylight is now giving us a clear view of the scene of a

deadly plane crash in watsonville in santa cruz county. two people on board that plane were killed. ktvu allie rasmus tells us that the plane almost slammed into watsonville community hospital. >> reporter: we are on the grounds of the watsonville community hospital. if you take a look behind us, you can see the parking lot out here is completely roped off with crime scene tape. when this single engine plane crashed yesterday it hit the pavement right around where you are looking at. from that location the plane skidded 50-75 yards across the parking lot before it slammed into the front lobby of this medical office building. you can can still see what is left of that plane and what is left of the wreckage. now the plane bursts into flames when it hit the building. witnesses that saw what happened took this video. the two people on board that plane died. the santa cruz medical examiner has not released their identities yet.

but their single engine took off around 7:30 last night. witnesses say the plane took off and tried to ascend but then nose dived toward the ground. that is where it hit that pavement we showed you a short time ago and skid across to hit the front of the building. the watson vail airport -- the watsonville airport is half a mile away from this medical office building. no one was hurt because this office building was closed. >> if it would have been hours earlier we had patients. there would have been a lot of injured people at the moment. even ourselves. we are pretty thankful no one was hurt of our staff or any of our patients. >> reporter: and that medical office building that was hit is a women's health center. again, it was closed at the time so there was no one inside. and according to hospital spokespersons none of the patients in the hospital next door to the office building were effected. there were no evacuations. a watson vail police sergeant says at 10:00 there will be a

briefing here on the hospital grounds. we are told we will hear from the faa and ntsb investigators who are the primary agencies investigating what happened here. we will also be hearing from representatives from the hospital and watsonville municipal airport. a texas firefighter has died after falling 20 feet from a railing at a texas rangers game. he was trying to catch the ball that one of the players threw his way. look at this. we will have much more on this tragedy in a live report we will get from arlington, texas. that is coming up for you at 6:45. cal train is investigating another fatality on its tracks. a person was hit and killed close to the churchill avenue crossing in palo alto just after 8:30 last night. cal train says that person was trespassing. the latest incident comes as the agency is looking into

installing cameras on the train. the decision was put on hold yesterday as cal train figures out whether the video recording including fatalities would be a matter of public record. time now 6:35. the truck company involved in last months fatal amtrak crash in the nevada desert is defending its safety record. a big rig driver for the john davis trucking company slammed into an amtrak train killing six people. the truck company says it wants to know why the driver ignored flashing lights and crossing gates and smashed into that moving train. the trucking company also says it was not at fault from two previous accidents. this morning is the final chapter in the u.s. space shuttle program. atlantis is scheduled to launch from florida in less than two hours. but the weather may get in the way. now that we understand the crew has just locked into the cabin. jim spellman is there at

kennedy space center. jim, what happens in the next two hours? i know we are waiting for the weather. >> reporter: yeah good morning, pam. still saying say only a 30% chance they will be able to hit their projected take off time. they only have a ten minute window there where they can take off if the weather is that is go either way. so far the astronauts they have just latched in after fueling up overnight. the next two hours are mostly technical checks. they have to make sure everything is okay with the shuttle. the vehicle itself. the two solid rocket boosters. they will keep monitoring the weather and hopefully be able to take off. listen, there was one thing they won't do is put any astronauts here in jeopardy. conditions are not optimal they will not hesitate to scrub. >> we are looking at the weather behind you. it looks pretty mild actually. gray skies. that flag was barely moving. is a big storm headed that way?

>> reporter: yeah there is storms heading this way. yesterday was terrible. downpours, heavy lightning. it was awful. much better today. there is bans of storms making their way this way. they are keeping their eye on them. they haven't moved off of that 30% figure. they are more optimistic this morning than they were yesterday. so they have keep a close eye on that. they need to have clouds are okay but they can't have heavy rain or lightning. they have to be able to take off. if all those things are in place we they will take off. >> thank you. jim spellman there live for that live update in florida. we will check back in with florida again within the next two hours. but right now we want to take you to chabot space and science center. doors open in an hour for a local launch viewing party. claudine wong is there as well.

the east shore freeway of vallejo and pinole. traffic is also doing very nicely heading down to the 580 interchange. if you are in contra costa county 680 there is a minor crash there on the right shoulder. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. we do have some fog. yesterday in this picture yesterday it was overcast. so there is a decrease in the coverage of the fog. we do have some mainly on the coast. there is some moving in on the marin-sonoma border moving inland there. but there is not much else unless you are down toward monterey. not much making a push inland. today a decrease in some of that fog. it's still there. more sun and warm temperatures very similar to yesterday. the weekend will be mostly sunny but cooler and breezy and next week looks much cooler with 60s and 70s inland for me. the cooler pattern has tried to kick in. it did cool down parts of the coast and bay. inland areas have cooled down.

they are not near 100. it's still hot for some. 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s for many. there is a little sliver holding on in the sonoma coast. there is a lot more yesterday. it's also shallow. some of the tropical clouds that have been blossoming that could happen again south of tahoe. there will be a decrease in that. 50s or very, very low 60s. 52 oakland. 53 santa rosa. fairfield only has a southwest at 8. the breeze is little stronger at cordelia. only west six at sfo. high pressure is moving slowly. it's big. it's dominating moist of the country. this will eventually come in. and a second one will develop behind that. if you're heading to the mountains this weekend possibility of thundershowers today. the lows are cool 40s and 30s. the days will be warm.

medical building. that plane almost slammed into the watsonville community hospital. the crew of the space shuttle atlantis and this is a live picture looking at what is happening there now. the shuttle is less than two hours away from a scheduled launch. however, there are big questions as to whether they will even be launched today. bad weather is jeopardizing the launch and nasa may decide within the next hour if they will postpone the mission. oakland police are busy investigating four different shootings in a 90 minute time span. all happened between 8:30 and 10:00 last night. ten people were injured. still not clear yet if all of the violence is connected. a tragedy at the ballpark. this morning we are learning more about the man who died after falling over a railing during last nights a's game against the texas rangers. reporter adrian is in arlington with more on this tragic story.

good morning, adrian. >> reporter: good morning, pam. a lot of people in shock this morning. the rangers organization, the oakland organization, the rangers fan base. people out for a walk here in the arlington area. we are learning more about that firefighter that died during last nights game. he's 39 years old from a city of about an hour and a half southwest of fort worth. he was at the game with his young son. estimated to be six to eight years old roughly. this happened during the second inning of last nights game against oakland. outfielder josh hamilton picked up a foul ball and tossed it into the stands and that man reached over for it and caught it. his momentum carried him over the railing. he fell 20 feet into the ground and -- workers at the ballpark rushed over to help him out. he was moving and he was speaking. apparently he was concerned about his son's well being up in the stands.

they loaded him into an ambulance. they are on the way to take him to a hospital in fort worth when he went into full cardiac arrest. he would die roughly an hour after the fall. obviously a shocking, shocking incident for all the fans who were at the game as well as the players. they were told after the game and one oakland a as i understand was in tears following the game. it was just last year another man also a firefighter fell from the stands here at the ballpark. he was in the hospital for a couple days but survived. back in the mid 90s a woman fell from the stands as well. she survived as well. following that game the height was raised 2.5 feet to four feet. texas rangers owner nolan ryan was asked about safety concerns. he said he did not want to address that. he said hi wanted the focus to be on the victim and the victim's family. 6:48. family and friends of michelle

on a regular commute day we have some slowing. we won't ask too many questions about that. livermore valley i want to show you here westbound 580 traffic looks good. if i move the map to the right you see there is a lot of red and yellow on the altamont pass area. coming into livermore. there is a lot of thick traffic there. it does even out by the time we reach the dublin area. if you are driving in hayward 880 looks good. across the bay 101 and 280 nice and quiet this morning if you are trying to get to sfo. 6:50 let's go to steve. >> thank you, sir. still some fog around. there was a lot more yesterday at this time. it's already starting to thin out a little bit. temperatures today very close to what we had yesterday. which means 60s to mid 90s from coast to inland areas. fog just going down the coast. kind of hanging on there. a little bit of a northerly breeze verses a sea breeze. the tropical clouds which have been down to the south giving thunderstorm activity.

news. market is actually recovering a bit. the dow jones has been down more than 100 points this morning. live look at the big board. it's down about 81. and that is on very disappointing monthly jobs report and we will talk about that throughout the morning. time now 6:54. more fallout from that hacking scandal in britain. this morning two former news of the world editors were arrested. one of the editors is the former communication chief to prime minister david cameron. both of the editors are tied to accusations that news of the world hacked the phones of celebrity murder victims and even the royal family. as we are speaking now police are searching the newsroom of a second tabloid in the uk. rupert announced yesterday that news of the world will end its publications this weekend after 168 years in business. later today prince william and his new bride will arrive
